OKCupid dating statistics shows racism very much alive

Category: statistics

Update: See the new statistics here

OkCupid is a free dating website that is interesting for releasing statistics on its users. Today they finally touched upon the subject of religion and race. You can see some statistics here, but they left the most interesting portion out as a teaser for next week.

I didn’t want to wait until next week so I cobbled together the nearly complete diagram they had by copy and pasting the axis.

mrr

Green: More responses - Red:Less responses

I may be wrong here, but at a cursory glance, you can pick out some very distinct trends. Either asian/white females are messaged far too often or have a distinct preference for white males. Black females seem to be on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Here are the approximate male race rankings (looking at color since I don’t have the numbers) from most replies to least replies.

White > Native American > Pacific Islander > Other = Middle Eastern > Asian = Hispanic > Black

And here are the approximate female race rankings from least responsive to most responsive.

Asian = White = Hispanic > Indian > Middle Eastern = Pacific Islander > Other = Native American > Black

No, I think they specifically removed the labels and rearranged the columns and rows from their chart. You will have to wait until next week.

    • admin says:

It is true that might have done that, but it is highly unlikely.

      Why, you ask?

      1. Their previous articles show a tendency to reuse.
      2. The diagrams are both about race and one right after each other.
      3. It is the same size and colors as the labeled diagram with races.
      4. The races are alphabetically arranged. So there really isn’t much reason for them to change it.
      5. Its extra work for them to scramble the squares.
      6. Its a highly plausible scenario from my personal anecdotes.

      • Ana says:

Even if you’re right, which I still think you’re not, attraction is not the same as racism.

  2. dre says:

You took the teaser diagram for next week and put labels from a completely different diagram about how people match. You should be shot for being a idiot.

  3. anom says:

No, the labels are almost certainly right. The numbers match up almost perfectly to what other studies have found.

  4. jj says:

And if your labeling is correct… this means nothing. I’m not thinking I am the exception to the rule, and because I am black chick I respond to a majority of my messages? I can’t even keep up with them, and don’t look at race, but content of the message when I respond.

    Nice deceitful title.

  5. Renee says:

I don’t even think it’s racism. We know from earlier posts that netspeak “wat” “ur” “sup” etc have a really low response rate. Every single message I’ve gotten from a black male has been something like “yo wat up sexy.” I think black males just suck at writing enticing messages.

    • anom says:

      isn’t that stereotyping?

    • DuncanIdaho says:

Wow, the patent absurdity of your post is breathtaking. Let’s see, you extrapolate the writing ability of all black males based on the infantile posts you’ve received on a dating site. Jesus

      • Renee says:

I don’t see how “all” is in anyway implied by my statement.

To say that a group does something generally means that it’s true on average. And I will bet you a house that the statistics support that black males have, on average, the highest usage of those poorly rated words.

Furthermore, I say nothing about ability itself. The reason black males don’t write enticing messages could simply be due to ignorance, lack of effort, lack of interest, etc.

Rather, I think it’s absurd that you would honestly believe that my intention was to imply that all black males are worse writers than any writer of any other age, regardless of sex, age, or any other characteristics. It is so absurd that I suspect that you are just trolling.

      • Renee says:

        Examples.

Latest message received from a black male:
“how u doin? could i learn more about u ”

Latest message received from a white male:
“I read your profile and liked it a lot. Brave New World is one of my favorite all time books; I have a collection of all of Terry Pratchett’s books (well, all of Discworld, some of the rest) back at home in [redacted].

Also, the fact that you used the term NSFW is tres cool. Not many people use it; you are truly a geek chick.

A little bit about myself: I’m a former Comp. Sci and Cognitive Sci graduate who has come to [redacted] to get an MBA. I’ve transitioned, somewhat, from science loving geek to money seeking douche. But there’s still a geek inside. Trust me on that.

If you’d like to get to know me, drop me a note. I’d love to get to know you.”

I know that’s only two messages, but it’s fairly representative.

        • admin says:

Let me reveal the unedited real message.

I read your profile and liked it a lot. Mein Kampf is one of my favorite all time books, I have a collection of all of Stephanie Meyer’s books (well, all of Twilight, some of the rest) back at home in the Hamptons.

Also, the fact that you used the term NSFW is très bien sehr gut ja (did I mention I speak 5 different European languages oui?).You are so geeky I thought it might be embarrassing to go out with you but it’ll be worth it if you put out.

A little bit about myself: I’m a former Visual Basic and Art History graduate who has come to University of Phoenix Online to get a PhD in Divinity. I’ve transitioned, somewhat, from science loving geek to money seeking pedo. The money seeking pedo is growing larger and larger inside. Trust me on that.

If youse like to get to “know” me, come over secksee. I’d luv 2 get to kno u. Holla.

    @Renee:

Just crawled out from under the bus to say sorry about the “yo wat up sexy.” Believe me, we (black men) wouldn’t do that if it didn’t work.

We don’t all talk like that.

    No, wait. We do, actually.

    Take care!

    *throws self back under bus*

  7. Jason says:

I have to chime in with Ana and say that, while this information is interesting, it in no way is able to show that racism is still “very much alive”. I have no doubt that it is, but your headline is disingenuous at best and deliberately inflammatory at worst. Other than that, great writing :)

    Stop stealing our woman!

  9. dee says:

It is true attraction is not racism, but if you are only attracted to a specific race you have to wonder why. There are amazing, nice, smart and good looking people of all races and there really should be no difference in reply rates based on race, not in this day and age.

If you would rather date an unattractive white female, who is not really a nice person rather than a good looking black woman who is a wonderful person only based on race what exactly would you call that?… eh OK perhaps you are just stupid and not racist? LOL!

BTW: this is the actual verbal description of their stats on the site,

    * Black women are sweethearts. Or just talkative. But either way, they are by far the most likely to reply to your first message. In many cases, their response rate is one and a half times the average, and overall black women reply about a quarter more often.
    * White men get more responses. Whatever it is, white males just get more replies from almost every group. We were careful to preselect our data pool so that physical attractiveness (as measured by our site picture-rating utility) was roughly even across all the race/gender slices. For guys, we did likewise with height.

It’s all true. And the more women on the pill, the stronger the effect. They’ll like girly guys who look and smell like them.
